The makers of the Chevrolet Volt are hoping video-game players will take a virtual, hands-free ride -- then maybe a real one -- in their electric car.
"Kinect Joy Ride," the first racing game for Microsoft's Kinect motion-controller system on the Xbox 360, will let players check out a Volt, inside and out, then take it cruising.
Microsoft announced the partnership with Chevrolet on Thursday.
"Chevrolet Volt is not only offering a new way for car buyers to interact with and learn about a vehicle before heading to the dealership," said Darren Huston, corporate vice president of the Global Consumer & Online group at Microsoft. "It's enabling people to virtually test-drive the Volt from the comfort of their own living room."
Players will be able to "unlock" the in-game Volt by watching a video advertisement for it on Xbox Live or the Web.
During last week's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the driving game "Forza" was one of the games demonstrated with the Kinect motion-controller.
The game allowed players to examine the virtual cars they were driving, get a look at their features and peek inside at the interiors.
That game is expected in 2011. "Kinect Joy Ride" will be available with the Kinect system when it is released in November.
Chevrolet also is expected to place kiosks in its showrooms that will allow people to take a virtual test drive of the eco-friendly vehicle
