Belgacom Combines Fixed and Mobile Internet

Belgacom Group is all set to launch an offer that combines mobile internet and ADSL. With this offer, customers can combine their ADSL service with the new offer Mobile Internet. With this, the customers will have the opportunity to use the internet anywhere, anytime with the mobile internet facility. Customers can use the mobile internet facility on their laptops too via the Proximus 3G network. This allows the customers to order Mobile Internet from Belgacom and make the payment via their Belgacom bill.
Mobile internet acts as a perfect supplement to high-speed Internet at home based on ADSL technology,. Users will connect to the Internet wirelessly on their laptop using a data card or USB modem. This will allow them to access their emails and other information on the internet in a fast and secure way.

Belgacom will launch the new service Mobile Internet for its ADSL customers on December 1. The company claims that the convergence of these products and services will provide more freedom and simplicity for customers, as well as attractive rates. Mobile Internet is being released in a “limited edition” and is available in two versions. The first one is the Mobile Internet 10 hr for €20.95 per month for 10 hrs of surfing in Belgium and the second on is the Mobile Internet No Limit for €34.95 per month for 2GB in Belgium.

The customers of Belgacom can pay for fixed and mobile service offers via a single bill. This allows them to order Mobile Internet from Belgacom and pay for it via their Belgacom bill. Mobile Internet can be combined with ADSL Go, ADSL Plus, VDSL Boost or a professional ADSL solution (e.g. ADSL Pro Compact, ADSL Office). The limited edition provides the Vodafone Mobile Connect data card or USB modem at €59.901 and they are compatible with HSDPA, Edge and GPRS.

SYDNEY: Internet service provider EFTel is heralding the coming of VDSL2 (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line), a new generation of broadband delivery the company says will be up to 400 times faster than ADSL.
Operating under the brand BroadbandNext, the network will be built on multi-service access node technology with an aggressive rollout scheduled to commence in February next year.
“Customers connected to BroadbandNext will enjoy benefits such as massively fast downloads, a wider range of service types, and improved levels of customer support from a smarted network,” said Eftel CEO Simon Ehrenfeld. “Apart from delivering superior services to customers, the rollout brings EFTel some freedom from the Telstra cost prison.”
EFTel is leveraging the service’s viability on the premise that VDSL2 is the technology best suited to the proposed FTTN (fibre to the node) environment of the future. FTTN is a form of optic-optic delivery that depends on copper or coaxial cable for ‘last mile’ delivery. A more advanced data delivery system is FTTH (fibre to the home), in which the optical signal reaches all the way into the end user’s living or office space.
But a spokesperson for rival ISP Pacific Internet said the fast delivery speeds of VDSL2 would be limited on copper—just like any DSL service.
“It’s a step in the right direction but it’s a small step toward the FTTH network that is being planned,” the spokesperson said. “And I don’t think there is any ratification for the VDSL2 standard in Australia yet—or hardware for that matter. I think coverage will be limited and EFTel is banking on VDSL2 to be ratified sooner rather than later.”
EFTel’s Enrenfeld said ISPs like Pacific Internet have a vested interest in the failure of the newer technology because they have invested heavily in DSLAM, which does not have an upgrade path to VDSL2. He also discounted the argument that copper was an inappropriate medium for high-speed data delivery.
“Once upon a time they said copper could only deliver 14 kilobytes, but now we have copper delivering ADSL2. How much we will get out of copper is an interesting question,” he said.
The Department for Broadband, Communications and Digital Technology confirmed no industry code or technical standards for VDSL2 have been ratified in Australia. However, the ministry confirmed a working committee had been established to incorporate the technology in line with international specifications and recommendations.

Infineon proposes VDSL2 technology

SEMICONDUCTOR and systems solutions manufacturer Infineon Technologies AG suggests the use of VDSL2 (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2) to overcome “last-mile” Internet service provision hurdles.
VDSL2 is an enhanced broadband technology that runs on existing copper technology and complements fibre-optic systems, said Tony Chen, director of product marketing and business development at Infineon.
“Theoretically, VDSL2 can offer (speeds of) 250Mbps over three kilometres,” he said during a roundtable discussion with local media recently.
Infineon claims ADSL technology pales in comparison to VDSL2 because it can offer 10Mbps speeds over a shorter distance.
And while it may be superior to the earlier DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology, Chen said ADSL cannot support triple play convergence. Triple play refers to TV broadcasts over the Internet, phone calls via the Web, and standard broadband Internet access.
“VDSL2 is the future of last-mile connectivity,” Chen said, adding that there are three ways to deploy the technology.
Firstly, it can complement the copper wire used to deliver Internet connectivity to homes from the centre of operations. It will lengthen the distance that copper wire technology is capable of, he said.
In a township, VDSL2 can provide an additional link to the fibre cabinet that is used to connect the town to cyberspace. This, Chen said, can increase coverage as well as bandwidth speeds in the area.
Finally, VDSL2 can be connected to an existing fibre-optic infrastructure to a building, to connect it to the Internet.
Chen said people in such buildings could enjoy the optimum speed delivered through VDSL2 because of the short and equal distances between the floors.
“It is all a matter of linking the last-mile between the remote Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) to the building,” he said.
Chen also claims that VDSL2 works symmetrically, which means it offers the same upload and download speeds.
For example, if the upload speed is 100Mbps, surfers will enjoy 100Mbps when downloading data too. ADSL upload speeds are typically slower than the download speeds, he said.
A good example of the kind of speeds VDSL2 can offer is that it takes only a minute to download 500 digital photographs, of which each are 1MB in size.
With ADSL, Chen estimated that the same photographs would take about an hour to download.
“Because the upload and download speeds are the same, the entire job is done faster and this is the kind of speeds we need in today’s Web 2.0 scenario,” he said.
Chen said consumers would be able to enjoy services such as high-quality videoconferencing, TV over the Internet, and e-karaoke with VDSL2, which are all bandwidth-hogging applications now.
However, the price of the technology is more expensive than that of ADSL. “It is double the price of ADSL but it can offer four times the speed. Wouldn’t that be worth it?” he said.
Chen declined to predict the uptake of the technology in this country; saying that it would depend on the maturity of the market.
VDSL2 is costly, he said, but does not require any additional civil engineering works to the existing copper wire or fibre-optic cables.
“The only changes that need to be made is the change of the line card at the central operations office and an upgrade to a more powerful modem at the consumer end,” he said.
Such a plan has not been announced by the Malaysian Government and Chen could not give an indication if and when this would take place.
However, he said, VDSL2 has been successfully deployed in Germany and South Korea, with China and Taiwan currently trying out the technology. By JO TIMBUONG

Nokia Siemens becomes DSLAM supplier for Hunan Telecom

STOCKHOLM (MarketWatch) -- Nokia Siemens Networks Thursday said it has become the major DSLAM supplier for Hunan Telecom, which is a subsidiary of China Telecom, in China.
Through the expansion contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will support Hunan Telecom in boosting network capacity and preparing for future VDSL2 development.
Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its DSL access solutions to an additional two cities in Hunan province, in central China. This will increase the reach of Nokia Siemens Networks-supplied DSL access to over one million end users in nine cities throughout Hunan.
