New technology against crime

The new CCTV cameras being installed in the Johannesburg CBD are technologically superior to the eight-year-old cameras previously in operation, chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar of the metro police said on Saturday.
"The new cameras will be able to monitor all angles, particularly of incident areas in the CBD [central business district]," said Minnaar.
The police have deployed extra officers to cover the areas not yet covered by the new cameras.
Police officers patrolling the area are alerted by officers monitoring feed from the cameras and respond quickly, Minnaar said.
"We [the police] have arrested more than 80 people involved in crime in the CBD since the fourth of October."
