Campaign wars among the three main political parties have gone cyber. Propaganda is a weapon to discredit presidential candidates.
Blogs and individual e-mails have been turned into campaign platforms for and against presidential candidates Mwai Kibaki (Party of National Unity), Raila Odinga (ODM) and Kalonzo Musyoka (ODM-Kenya).
The cyber propaganda war began earlier when it was apparent that President Kibaki would seek another five-year term. This was the circulation of an e-mail detailing senior employees of strategic ministries and parastatals from one tribe, followed by attempts to discredit the presidents' economic development record by detailing how the prices of essential commodities had sky rocketed since 2003.
But the cyber wars escalated after parties nominated their presidential candidates. The candidates have been the targets of hate mail with Kibaki apparently getting the most bashing. Raila follows, with Kalonzo trailing.
Kibaki and his team have been accused of allegedly trying to raise campaign money through the sale of shares of Safaricom. Parties associated with him would be funded allegedly through billions of shillings set aside for the purpose by a local bank.
Other mails claim that the shares were reserved for tribes from a particular region under the company name, Mega, alleged to be a corruption of Gema.
Raila has his share with allegation of being irreligious. Targeting Raila is also a MoU between him and National Muslim Leaders Forum (Namlef), which indicates that he recognises Islam.
Propaganda mail targeting Kalonzo surrounds his alleged plans to join President Kibaki in PNU to defeat Raila who is a threat to Kibaki.
The propaganda mail alleges that Kalonzo was offered Sh 10 billion by retired President Moi to join Kibaki to ensure the defeat of Raila in the General Election.
It was also alleged in the propaganda e-mail that Kalonzo was to go to Europe to ensure that the money got into his overseas, Cayman Island bank account, before returning to join PNU.
