Four Additional AIDS Technology Transfers
Roche Engages in Four Additional AIDS Technology Transfers to Strengthen
Local Manufacturing
Roche today announced that it has
entered into four new technology transfers with local manufacturing
companies
in African and Asian nations where improvements in access to anti-retroviral
therapy are needed. These companies are Regal Pharmaceuticals in Kenya, CAPS
Holdings in Zimbabwe, Shelys Pharmaceuticals in Tanzania and Beximco
Pharmaceuticals Ltd in Bangladesh. As part of Roche's Technology Transfer
Initiative, these companies will be provided free of charge with the
technical
expertise to manufacture generic HIV medicine, based upon the processes to
produce saquinavir, Roche's second line(1) HIV medicine.
Since the launch two years ago, Roche has signed Technology Transfer
agreements with a total of nine companies across sub-Saharan Africa and in
Least Developed Countries in other parts of the world. Roche also has
received
similar requests from a total of 35 manufacturers in 15 eligible countries,
including Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. Roche will continue to work
with
these individual applicants to assess production capabilities.
William M. Burns, CEO Division Roche Pharma, said, "these new agreements
highlight the ongoing contribution that our Roche Technology Transfer
Initiative is making to help strengthen and expand local manufacturing
capabilities for HIV medicines in resource-limited countries. With more
local
manufacturers now looking to scale-up production of essential medicines, the
continued uptake of this initiative highlights Roche as an innovative leader
in supporting sustainable solutions to improve HIV healthcare where it is
needed most."
In addition to these four new agreements, Roche has expanded the
Technology Transfer Initiative with training seminars for local
manufacturers
across sub-Saharan Africa and the world's Least Developed Countries. These
sessions focus on the development of improved manufacturing processes and
provide a forum for Roche to share its knowledge and experience with those
who
have access to fewer resources. The knowledge gained by local manufacturers
enables them to strengthen their manufacturing capability and increase
manufacturing knowledge on the production of medicines beyond HIV.
Krishna Karnataki, General Manager GMP & Formulations of Shelys
Pharmaceuticals in Tanzania, commented, "the practical support that Roche
has
provided has been a great learning experience for my team, enabling us to
make
improvements to our entire technical and quality systems. We have been
enthused by this partnership and are eager to work with Roche on this
initiative to help meet the needs of our people suffering from HIV
infections,
and improve availability of these badly needed medications."
Roche's dedicated team will work onsite at manufacturing facilities at
all
four locations and from its headquarters in Switzerland to undertake the
technology transfers. The companies will be able to produce saquinavir for
supply throughout countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and to those defined as
Least Developed by the United Nations, due to Roche's policy of not filing
patents on antiretroviral medicines in these countries.
About Roche's Technology Transfer Initiative
Announced in January 2006, the Roche Technology Transfer Initiative
provides local manufacturers with the technical expertise required to
produce
generic HIV medicines. Manufacturers in sub-Saharan Africa and the Least
Developed Countries wishing to produce generic saquinavir for use in these
countries will not be required to apply for a voluntary license because
Roche
has committed as part of its global policy not to enforce patents on
antiretroviral medicines within these countries. Interested manufacturers
should contact the Project Manager for the Technology Transfer Initiative at
the Roche Kenya office: info.aidstechtransfer@roche.com.
Interested local manufacturers in the following countries are invited to
contact Roche to discuss the Technology Transfer Initiative: Afghanistan,
Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Botswana, Burundi,
Cambodia,
Cameroon, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad
Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea,
Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kenya,
Kiribati,
Lao People's Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi,
Maldives, Mali, Mauritius, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia,
Nigeria,
Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Senegal,
Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Africa, Swaziland, United
Republic of Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Yemen,
Zambia, Zimbabwe.
About Roche's patent and pricing policy
In addition to its Technology Transfer Initiative, Roche will maintain
its
current pricing and patent policy. No patents for any of Roche medicines -
across all disease areas - will be filed in the world's Least Developed
Countries (LDCs), as defined by the UN. Roche will not file patents on new
antiretroviral medicines in LDCs or sub-Saharan Africa. Roche will not take
action in these countries against the sale or manufacture of generic
versions
of antiretroviral medicines. Generic versions of such HIV medicines can
therefore be produced in LDCs and sub-Saharan Africa without the need for a
voluntary or compulsory license. Roche makes its HIV protease inhibitors
Invirase and Viracept available at no-profit prices for direct supplies from
Roche Basel to LDCs and sub-Saharan Africa.

Automakers ready to cash in on technology
GM CEO, unveiling driverless car and fuel-cell SUV, says future is
electronic
Since the International Consumer Electronics Show opened Monday, the buzz
surrounding automotive technology has been very real, and very loud, as a
Formula One race car speeds around a tiny track outside the Las Vegas
Convention Center.
Carmakers and manufacturers of electronics for them believe they have a
reason to make noise. The Consumer Electronics Association projects that the
market for car tech will exceed $12 billion in 2008, having doubled in just
five years.
CES 2008 is devoting more than a quarter-million square feet to car tech,
meaning the show of automotive technology alone this week reaches almost
half the size of the critically important North American International Auto
Show.
Even though the giant Detroit auto show opens next week, the convergence of
automobiles and high-tech products is nearing critical mass, and the head of
one of the Big Three automakers detoured to Las Vegas to deliver a keynote
address, the first time an automaker has gotten one of the marquee speaking
slots in the history of CES.
"Our intent is to bring you the future of transportation," Richard Wagoner,
chief executive of General Motors Corp., said Tuesday evening. "We'll do
this by working more closely than ever with the consumer electronics
industry, using electronics to reinvent the automobile."
'Lessons for the automotive industry'
In terms of the impact it hopes to make, GM is flooring it this week. Ahead
of Wagoner's address, it unveiled a prototype of the first "driverless car,"
a modified version of the sport-utility Chevrolet Tahoe called the Boss,
which the company hopes to have on the road within a decade. The Boss is
meant to navigate traffic-choked streets without any human involvement,
using cameras, radar and lasers.
Tuesday, Wagoner drove onto the stage in a Chevrolet Volt, an electric car
that he said was on track to reach the market by 2010. Then he introduced an
entirely new zero-emissions vehicle, dubbed the Provoq, a Cadillac designed
to run 300 miles on a single charge of its hybrid hydrogen fuel
cell/electric motor.
The emphasis on electric power is an important part of GM's strategy,
Wagoner said in an interview Tuesday with CNBC.
"We really see electronics playing a huge role as we endeavor to reduce our
reliance on foreign oil," he said, citing GM's experience with the OnStar
navigation system, which it introduced 10 years ago.
OnStar "taught us that the electronics industry has some lessons for the
automotive industry," he said.
GPS systems go for whiz-bang
If automakers are ready to embrace high technology, there are more than
enough companies here eager to supply them. The automotive hall is filled
with everything from new computer-driven safety equipment to wireless
high-end audio and video systems to sophisticated hands-free communications
gadgets.
But the big category is navigation using the Global Positioning System
satellite array. The CEA projected final 2007 sales to be up 41 percent, to
seize nearly a quarter of all car technology sales.
The biggest names in the industry are showing off advanced interactive GPS
systems that promise real-time data, ditching the stand-alone, pre-loaded
GPS module in favor of always-connected satellite and cell-network
navigation systems, some of them voice-activated.
The sophistication of the newer systems has drawn computing giants Microsoft
Corp. and Google Inc. into the game.
Google, for example, is partnering with Magellan Navigation Inc., on a
voice-recognition system that they said would eventually handle contacts and
calendar entries.
Microsoft, meanwhile, announced that Sync, a Bluetooth system developed with
Ford Motor Co. to allow wireless use of mobile devices like phones and MP3
players in the car, would be upgraded to automatically call 911 whenever an
airbag deployed. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC
Universal.)
Microsoft's MSN Direct service is also wrapped into some of the new systems.
Garmin Ltd. said it would introduce the voice-recognition Nuvi 880 later
this year, delivering real-time data integrated with Windows Live.
Two-way data streams promised
Other systems, such as one from the French company Mobile Devices,
incorporate real-time data in the other direction, collecting information
from users on the road to warn drivers of traffic snarls and to alert them
to available parking space and the lowest nearby gas prices.
But the device getting the most attention is one the CIA would admire.
Auto Page Inc. introduced a GPS alarm system called C3, which won CES's Best
of Innovations award for in-car navigation. C3 integrates a module allowing
owners to control their vehicles from anywhere in the world they can find a
compatible GSM cell phone signal.
Auto Page is touting C3 as a way to monitor a car's security and to start it
remotely, but CES participants seeing it for the first time are already
dreaming up other uses. Most popular, it seems, is the chance to track your
teenager's driving habits - with C3, you'll be able to confront Junior with
the text message proving he was speeding when he sneaked out last night.

Epson and Atlantic Technology Make Front Projection Cheap(er)
LAS VEGAS-Imagine a home theater system with full 5.1 surround sound, a DVD
player and a 100-inch screen for under $5,000 - or under $7,000 for 1080p.
Epson and speaker manufacturer Atlantic Technology have built a complete
front-projection system, dubbed the Ensemble HD, that offers easy
installation, a 100-inch motorized screen and an Epson PowerLite 3LCD
projector. The 720p version will be priced at $4,995; the 1080p version
weighs in at $6,995.
One of the key problems with front-projection systems is potential buyer
confusion. Choosing between the myriad components causes most interested
buyers to walk away. Add in the hassles of installation, which include
multiple cable runs, having to plumb new power connections and installing
large A/V racks.Only the most dedicated videophiles follow through with
front projection systems.
Epson took a long, hard look at the problem and developed the Ensemble HD.
The system includes components designed by renowned speaker manufacturer
Atlantic Technology. The front speaker array is actually built into the
powered screen mount, and consists of three 4.5-inch midrange driers and
three 1-inch, horn loaded tweeters. The 4-inch, full range surround speakers
are built into the projector housing, but can be detached for wall mounting.
The multichannel amplifier is built into the subwoofer, delivering 100 watts
per channel to the 10-inch subwoofer and 50W per channel to each of the
satellite speakers.
Boundary compensation controls are built into the control unit, allowing
mounting flexibility for the combination screen and speaker array. This
allows the screen to be wall mounted, ceiling mounted or even mounted at the
junction of wall and ceiling. A universal remote controls the volume, lowers
the screen and powers up the key components. The control unit also has a
pair of HDMI inputs, plus component video, for hooking up additional
components, such as high definition disc players and set-top boxes.
A single cable runs from the subwoofer to the screen. That cable carries
both screen motor and speaker power to the screen. Another cable runs from
the screen to the projector, powering both the projector and surround
speakers.
Epson estimates that the entire unit can be installed in four hours by a
professional installer. All the hardware needed for installation, including
paintable cable trays and mounting hardware are included.
Both Ensemble HD units are available now. More information can be found at
Epson's Web page.

InfoWorld's Technology of the Year Awards
The feature well: Yes, it's that time once again. From the hundreds of IT
products InfoWorld's Test center evaluated over the last 12 months, we
choose and recognize those most groundbreaking, capable, polished and
valuable -- across an overflowing fistful of categories that include
everything from application development to networking to security. 2008
Technology of the Year Awards. The winners represent the cream of the crop,
to be certain.
Best of the blogs: "What the hell is wrong with Microsoft these days?"
Randall Kennedy begins Flyback to the future. "It seems like every time
their R&D folks come up with something unique and powerful (volume
snapshots), some idiot further down the program management chain steps in
and cripples it." This time around Kennedy is referring to Microsoft's Vista
Backup utility, which Kennedy considers a technically superior solution that
is hamstrung by several factors. So much so that the FOSS folks are working
on their own alternative, dubbed Flyback and "progressing so well that the
developers have time to indulge in little side projects, like a promised
'3D' effect for restoring archived files/folders."
The news beat: Microsoft bids $1.2 million for Fast Search and Transfer,
which it says it will integrate into SharePoint as a means to build out
high-end search offerings. Symantec says that the U.S. government needs to
take new cybersecurity steps as it accounted for just more than a quarter of
data breaches that could lead to identity theft in the first half of last
year. IBM, meanwhile, digs into security management and says that building
out its portfolio in that area is both ongoing and inevitable. And Linux
creator Linus Torvalds maintains that he is sticking with the GPL 2, though
the Free Software Foundation has released GPL 3, because version 2 still
makes the most sense for the Linux kernel now.

cyber technology to detect online fraudsters
WASHINGTON: Shopping or carrying out other transactions online may soon be a
safer affair, for Iowa State University researchers are developing a cyber
technology to track fraudsters.
Yong Guan, Iowa State University's Litton Assistant Professor of Electrical
and Computer Engineering, says that his team has already developed a
technology that may help online advertising companies like Google and Yahoo
reduce "click fraud"--falsely increasing hits to ads posted on Web sites
that results in higher costs for pay-per-click advertising.
He and the Iowa State University Research Foundation have filed a patent on
this technology.
Guan hopes that his research will one day enable millions of naive Internet
users to protect their computers with the latest security patches and
safeguards.
"There are a lot of security issues and researchers have worked on them from
the early 1980s. And 30 years later we're still working on them. These are
hard problems," he says.
Compared to the past few years, he adds, there has been a sea change in the
motive for which cyber crimes are conducted nowadays. While hackers used to
attack systems for thrill earlier, they do it for money after the advent of
electronic commerce these days.
Guan says that all such changes compelled him to take up research into
technologies that may make computing more secure, and hold cyber criminals
accountable.
One such technology, he says, is digital forensics which may facilitate the
extraction of criminal evidence from computers, network hardware, cell
phones and other electronic devices.
The work is focused on three projects -- network attack attribution to help
investigators find the real origins of cyber criminals and attackers, click
fraud detection to protect Internet advertising, and auction fraud
technology to quickly identify the people and their accomplices who run
bogus Internet auctions.
Wireless security is another field which Guan's team is concerned about.
They are working on three projects aimed at protecting a new secure
network-coding model from attacks while it transmits network traffic,
developing location-based security systems to allow document viewing only in
designated secure rooms, and securing wired and wireless multicasts over the
Internet by enabling webcasters to manage and limit access to their content.
Guan is also running a project on Privacy protection to protect the identity
of Internet users. This will aid in keeping the identities and medical
records of people who use online pharmacies, besides preserving the
anonymity of people using an online voting system.

market innovations in automotive climate, interior and electronics systems.
The collaboration on this demonstration vehicle is the culmination of
discussions initiated several years ago by the two companies. The initial
discussions between the two companies were intended to learn about one
another's innovation processes.
"From those discussions, we realized we had very similar cultures that
fostered open innovation," said Steve Meszaros, vice president of Visteon
electronics. "From there, we reframed our discussions and began
collaborating
on solution-based products; that is, products that solve a particular
consumer
need."
The companies began to design a solution-based prototype vehicle, taking
into consideration consumer research and mega-trends. The vehicle unveiled
today demonstrates more than 50 innovative technologies. These technologies
are solution based, addressing six social trends: comfort, connectivity,
convenience, health, flexibility (individualism), and sensory. For example,
the vehicle's center stack electronics has the capability to link the user's
personal devices -- such as an iPod(R) or mobile phone -- to the vehicle's
audio system, allowing the vehicle controls to become the user interface.
This
solution addresses the connectivity trend. The two companies plan to unveil
another demonstration vehicle in Europe later this year.
"This relationship is exciting; it brings together two automotive
companies with unique and complementary strengths," said Steve Schreiner,
marketing director, 3M Global Automotive Market Center. "3M and Visteon
intend
to use the demonstration vehicle as a centerpiece in discussions with
automakers about developing technology that addresses social trends and
meets
consumer needs."
Visteon and 3M are able to innovate intelligently because of their
in-depth understanding of both the OEMs who manufacture vehicles and the end
consumers who ultimately purchase vehicles.
This collaborative approach is key to Visteon's electronics strategy.
Visteon strategically aligns itself with leading innovators in the consumer
segment to ensure its products use the latest cutting edge technologies.
"We've worked with Nintendo to bring GameBoy(R) Advanced to the vehicle
and other companies such as Boston Acoustics to bring the industry the best
there is in sound systems," explained Meszaros. "3M is a known innovator in
a
broad range of technologies that can be applied to current customer concerns
and future trends."
Visteon Corporation
Visteon is a leading global automotive supplier that designs, engineers
and manufactures innovative climate, interior, electronic and lighting
products for vehicle manufacturers, and also provides a range of products

AMD Displays Technology Leadership
AMD Displays Technology Leadership With New AMD Xilleon(TM) Panel Processors
for Outstanding LCD TV Image Quality
AMD today unveiled a new family of AMD Xilleon panel processors designed to
provide unrivaled visual quality in liquid crystal display (LCD) digital
TVs. AMD's new panel processors deliver advanced motion compensation and
frame rate conversion technology for excellent image processing, resulting
in a rich, immersive entertainment experience.
"The visual experience now defines the user experience. We are committed to
helping manufacturers deliver crystal clear '20/20 television' to a growing
mainstream market of digital TV consumers worldwide, enabling The Ultimate
Visual Experience," said Dave Di Orio, corporate vice president and general
manager, AMD's DTV division. "AMD is driving innovation and design
efficiencies with outstanding technology in highly integrated, flexible AMD
Xilleon processor solutions, which now span from TV motherboards to display
panels."
As consumers demand ever-larger TVs with greater visual clarity, such as
that offered by full high-definition (1080p) technology, the appearance of
picture defects such as blurred motion, or jerky movements referred to as
"film judder," can detract from the viewing experience and leave consumers
dissatisfied with their TV purchase. This trend toward larger TVs, coupled
with the global transition to digital TV broadcasts starting with the U.S.
in early 2009, has significantly increased the importance of DTV visual
quality.
To help LCD TV manufacturers deliver a superior visual experience, the new
AMD Xilleon 410, 411, 420 and 421 panel processor family is designed to
provide unrivaled picture quality up to full HD resolution, with design
flexibility to enable TV brand differentiation, and unprecedented system
integration to help reduce manufacturing costs. This advanced technology has
been chosen by Samsung, the world's largest provider of
thin-film-transistor, liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCD), for their patented
120Hz Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation solution.
"AMD Xilleon panel processors customized with Samsung proprietary McFi
technology are enabling us to set what is essentially a new industry
standard for crystal clear television picture quality," said Sang Soo Kim,
Ph.D., executive vice president and Samsung fellow, Samsung Electronics.
"Working closely with AMD helps us maintain our leadership position in
supplying superior panel solutions to our valued customers."
AMD Xilleon panel processors offer motion compensation and frame rate
conversion based on AMD's enhanced phase-plane correlation technology,
supporting high-quality visual processing for 100Hz/120Hz LCD TVs up to full
HD resolution. The key is the processor's ability to identify incoming
24Hz/60Hz film and video signals and convert them to 120Hz by determining
motion between picture frames and intelligently creating additional content
frames to represent that "in-between" motion with exceptional clarity. To
provide greater flexibility for manufacturers to customize their TVs, these
AMD panel processors offer a high degree of programmability and can be
integrated into the LCD panel subsystem or TV motherboard.
Mitsubishi MZW series 120Hz LCD TVs, which are based on Samsung's McFi
solution and the AMD Xilleon panel processor, are available in three panel
sizes in Japan. Other leading TV manufacturers are expected to adopt AMD
Xilleon panel processors in early 2008.

Gates' CES swan song focuses on technology's human touches
In the next digital decade, technology will become much more in tune with
users as it learns their personal tastes and incorporates more natural,
human interaction such as touch, gesture and voice recognition, said
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates as he kicked off the Consumer Electronics Show
for the last time Sunday evening.
Gates, giving his 11th CES keynote address in Las Vegas, will hand off many
of his responsibilities at Microsoft in July.
His departure comes as the industry enters the second digital decade, Gates
said, and technology is playing a greater role not just in helping people
access information and entertainment at any time or place, but also in
customizing material.
"The trend is clear: All media and entertainment will be software-driven,"
Gates said. "The first digital decade has been tremendously successful. The
second digital decade will be more focused on connecting people. It will be
more focused on being more user-centric."
In an example of how technology will enable more personalization and human
interaction, Gates demonstrated Microsoft Surface, a tabletop computer that
uses touch-screen technology. Gates customized a snowboard using the
tabletop computer, adding a snowflake decal and his name by brushing his
fingertips along the tabletop. In the future, he said, he could broadcast
the design to his friends through the Internet just by placing his cell
phone on the tabletop, which recognizes his phone.
In 2007, much of the high-tech thunder was stolen by the iPhone and
Nintendo's Wii, with Microsoft's release of its new operating system,
Windows Vista, receiving lackluster buzz. Though Microsoft remains a
dominating force in technology, rivals from Google to Apple have taken aim
at the Redmond, Wash., empire, chipping away at its influence.
Gates indicated Sunday that Microsoft wasn't lying low.
While Apple CEO Steve Jobs has said he plans to sell 10 million iPhones by
the end of this year, Gates said Microsoft has sold 11 million cell phones
that use Windows mobile technology and expects to reach a total of 20
million by the end of 2008.
On the entertainment front, Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's
entertainment and devices division, shared the stage with Gates to talk
about how Microsoft has sold 17.7 million Xbox gaming consoles. He noted
that consumers spent more on the Xbox than the Wii and PlayStation 3
combined.
Bach also announced a partnership with MGM Studios, which will offer movie
downloads such as "Legally Blonde" through the Xbox. This month, ABC and
Walt Disney will join the Xbox's lineup of movie and television downloads,
bringing such titles as "High School Musical," "Hannah Montana" and "Grey's
Anatomy."
Altogether, its programming now rivals what's offered by cable and satellite
providers, Bach said.
Bach also demonstrated Microsoft's voice recognition software. Bringing a
Ford SUV onto the stage, Bach showed how Microsoft technology is allowing
people to listen to their music collection in their car, directing it with
the sound of their voice.
A new version will better be able to recommend local restaurants, points of
interest and movie listings by using GPS technology, he said.
Gates also announced an exclusive partnership with NBC to broadcast the
Beijing Summer Olympics on the Internet through MSN.com. Addressing the
lengthy time difference between Beijing and the United States, the online
partnership will allow fans to watch 3,000 hours of on-demand videos and
live streams, as well as to take advantage of online community and
social-networking features.
And as Gates' swan song came to a close, he and Bach called onto the stage
Guitar Hero champion Kelly Law-Yone and Slash from Guns n Roses, who rocked
the presentation to a close.
Separately, Sony chairman and chief executive Sir Howard Stringer took the
stage at a news conference Sunday night to highlight the company's organic
light-emitting diode, or OLED, television, the first of its kind to be sold
in the United States. The 11-inch display is 3 millimeters thick. Companies
like Samsung and others have been chasing displays made with OLED technology
because they consume less power, offer high-quality picture resolution and
are super-thin to boot.
"This introduction of an OLED television reinforces our ability to lead the
industry," Stinger said.
Sony also introduced the Rolly, a robotic personal music player that dances
to music. A limited-edition Rolly will go on sale in the first quarter of
this year at Sony Style stores.
Among the new Sony Ericsson phones, the W760 is Sony's first walkman phone
with 3G high-speed Internet access. The phone also features tilt gaming
controls so users can play games just by moving the phone back and forth.
The Z555, a fashion phone with a diamond design on the outside, also
features the ability to silence calls or turn off an alarm simply by waving
a hand over the handset.

Sony Develops New Close Proximity Wireless Transfer Technology
Sony Develops New Close Proximity Wireless Transfer Technology
'TransferJet'; Large Data Quantities Sent at Speeds of 560Mbps with Just a
Touch
Sony today announced "TransferJet", a new Close Proximity Wireless Transfer
Technology enabling the high speed transfer of large data files (photos, HD
images, etc.) between electronic devices such as mobile phones, digital
cameras, digital video cameras, computers and TVs. Using this technology,
data can be sent at speeds of 560Mbps. Sony will present reference exhibits
of this newly developed technology at CES International, to be held in Las
Vegas from January 7th.
TransferJet is an extremely simple wireless technology which eliminates the
need for complex setup and operation. For example, just touching a TV with a
digital camera enables photos to be instantaneously displayed on the TV
screen. Alternatively, downloaded music content can be easily enjoyed by
touching a mobile phone to a portable audio player. TransferJet can be used
as a Universal Interface among a wide variety of consumer
electronics devices.
Sony will actively promote the use of TransferJet across the consumer
electronics industry and seek to enhance the enjoyment of mobile
device-based content through the introduction of various products and
services based on this technology.
1) Simple interface and intuitive operation: "Touch & Get"
Just touch two electronic products together and files are transferred
automatically. TransferJet eliminates the complex setup procedures required
by existing wireless systems, and no access point is necessary. Furthermore,
users are also able to register their electronic products to enable
TransferJet to recognize specific products. For example, by registering only
the devices within their household, users can prevent external data leakage.
Operation is also very intuitive, and as there is no host/target
relationship, data transfer can take place between mobile phones and PCs for
example, as well as between mobile devices.
2) Realizing Stable High Speed Data Transmission
TransferJet's physical layer transmission rate is 560Mbps, and even allowing
for error corrections and protocol overheads, the effective physical layer
transmission rate is 375Mbps. TransferJet is also capable of selecting the
appropriate data transmission rate according to the wireless environment.
Even if the conditions for transmission deteriorate, it will maintain the
highest possible wireless connectivity by automatically lowering the data
transmission rate.
As TransferJet is a close proximity wireless system which radiates very
low-intensity radio waves, it causes almost no interference to other
wireless systems, and there is no impact to performance even if multiple
users simultaneously multiple TransferJet system. Moreover, users of
electronic products incorporating TransferJet technology are able to
transfer data among each other's products regardless of whether they are
indoors or outdoors and irrespective of their geographic location.
3) Development of New "TransferJet Coupler"
Sony's newly developed "TransferJet Coupler" is based on electric induction
field coupling to deliver superior propagation performance compared to
conventional radiation field based antennas. It maintains high transmission
gain and efficient coupling in near-field proximity, while providing sharp
attenuation over longer distances to avoid interference with other wireless
systems. Furthermore, as there is no antenna polarization it is possible to
transmit data without any performance loss, regardless of the contact angle
of the electronic devices.
TransferJet Specifications
Central Frequency: 4.48GHz
Transmission Power: -70dBm/MHz or less (average power)
Corresponds with low intensity radio
wave regulations in Japan, and with local
regulations in respective overseas regions.
Transmission Rate: 560Mbps (Max.) / effective 375Mbps
It is capable of selecting the appropriate
transmission rate depending on the wireless
environment.

Dell promotes technology to SMEs with Vostro product line
PERSONAL computer (PC) and notebook maker Dell Malaysia aims to assist small
and medium enterprises (SMEs) become more competitive by using technology as
one of the forefronts and information as a core part of their business.
General manager Pang Yee Beng said a majority of Dell's SME customers were
aware that the use of information technology (IT) was important and could
help grow their business in a more efficient way.
"One of Dell's initiatives is to aid SMEs to adopt IT and to make sure that
people read more about successful stories of SMEs adopting IT to become more
competitive," he said.
Nonetheless, a Dell survey showed that SMEs did not want complications but
wanted things to be simple.
"We make our products friendly, easily accessible and very secure for SMEs
because they typically do not have a huge IT team," Pang told StarBiz.
"That's why we introduced the Vostro line of products that are customised
specifically for the needs of the SMEs.
"From the feedback received from customers worldwide, we realised that 55%
of SME owners are personally involved in IT implementation. All of them have
less than two people in their IT team."
The new Vostro (Latin for "yours") line of desktop and notebook PCs are
targeted at small and medium sized businesses and enterprises.
Among them are the Vostro 1000, 1400 and 1500 notebook PCs and Vostro 200
desktop PC.
The Vostro 1400 is for users with high-mobility needs. It has a 14.1-inch
wide antiglare display as well as integrated graphics card (128MB nVidia
GeForce Go 8400M GS).
Meanwhile, the Vostro 1500 has a 15.4-inch display and is a higher-end
notebook for those who require performance and power.
Pang said that over the years, Dell had been interacting with three million
customers worldwide a day through telephone, toll-free lines, outside sales
people and its website.
"We received a lot of feedback from customers, especially small enterprises,
that they required a simple product.
"Generally, costs and complexity are the main factors that caused some SMEs
to be reluctant to implement IT," he added.
Dell's Vostro range of products contains built-in wireless and security
solutions in its notebook, so that customers do not have to look for these
solutions separately.
Dell also has tied-in a response time guaranteed service with SMEs for
faster response time and to replace a machine when it breaks down.
"In Malaysia, the SME segment is one of Dell's highest growth markets and is
a significant part of Dell's business," Pang said.
Currently, Dell has a large presence in the country in terms of service
support, logistics as well as sales and marketing. It has about 5,000
employees in the Penang plant and 400 in its Putrajaya office.
"With the launch of Vostro in July last year, we are intensifying the focus
on SMEs," Pang said.
This is another of Dell's initiatives to make sure that it delivers the
right solutions and value-added products and solutions to customers.
Pang believes that if a company picked the right IT partner and utilised the
right solution, it could build an efficient business.

Samsung Opens a Window to the Future of Television Technology at CES 2008
Next-generation OLED models, ultra-slim 52-inch LCD and quadruple
full-HD LCD lead array of cutting-edge models on display
LAS VEGAS--(Business Wire)--Strengthening its leadership position as the
world's premier
provider of sophisticated, beautifully designed HD televisions,
Samsung Electronics is providing attendees at the 2008 Consumer
Electronics show with a roadmap of where TV technology is headed with
an assortment of bleeding edge products on display.
The lineup at the Samsung booth will include two (14.1" and 31")
organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs in addition to an ultra-slim
52" LCD TV and quadruple full-HD LCD TV. Each reflects Samsung's
proficiency at combining high resolution images with sleek design.
"OLED and quadruple full-HD technologies represent an entirely new
paradigm in picture resolution technology," said Dr. Jongwoo Park,
president of Digital Media Business, Samsung Electronics. "This is a
level of clarity that is in some cases four times beyond current
industry standards yet retains the slim fits and light weight that
have made our models preferred among consumers."
OLED is seen as a powerful contender to be at the center of the
future display market mainstream given its very high resolution,
svelte profile and extremely light weight. Electronics manufacturers
have already begun exhibiting these next-generation displays at major
trade shows, but Samsung is going a step further at CES 2008. The OLED
is being presented as a finished TV product that features an elegant,
optimized design.
The chic, ultra-slim OLED TVs employ AM OLED panels developed by
Samsung SDI, a Samsung affiliate dedicated to display production. The
finished products weigh some 40 percent less than other LCD TVs of the
same size while boasting a contrast ratio of 1 million to one, color
gamut of 107% and brightness of 550nit. Samsung will begin commercial
production of mid- to large-sized OLED TVs around 2010.
Also on display at the Samsung booth will be a 52" LCD TV that is
slimmer than any other non-OLED TV ever made. It has 50,000:1 contrast
ratio and 550nit brightness. Mass production of this model is
scheduled to begin in 2009, as the company continues to maintain its
leadership in the flat panel TV market.
Samsung continues to set the pace in the arena of picture quality
with the unveiling of "Quadruple full-high definition" (QFHD), which
refers to a resolution of 3,840 pixels by 2,160 pixels, which is four
times greater than that for a typical high-definition display. Samsung
will unveil the world's largest (82") QFHD LCD TV to date.
Finally, Samsung is introducing a 57" LCD monitor (model: 570DXN)
that can recognize a user's motions even when the user is a short
distance away from the monitor. The monitor takes advantage of a 3D
motion sensing solution developed by interactive media company
Reactrix Systems. Samsung plans to commercialize this monitor in 2008
and will target it for commercial (B2B) advertising applications.

Pioneer Unveils KURO Flat Panel Technology Concepts for Extreme Contrast
Pioneer Unveils KURO Flat Panel Technology Concepts for Extreme Contrast and
Ultra Thin 9-mm Thick Display at 2008 CES
Exploiting the Advantages of Self-Emitting Plasma Displays
TOKYO--(Business Wire)--Pioneer Corporation (TOKYO:6773)(ISIN:JP3780200006)
(President and
Representative Director: Tamihiko Sudo) today unveils concepts for
future plasma display technologies under the code name "Project KURO"
at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. After a year where it
was proved that its award-winning plasma technologies are leagues
above the rest of the HDTV industry in picture quality, Pioneer
engineers preview future Project KURO concepts for extreme contrast
and advanced design. The extreme contrast concept realizes the
reproduction of absolute black, and the advanced design concept
becomes the world's thinnest 50-inch display(1) at only nine
millimeters (mm) thick.
- Project KURO extreme contrast concept
The extreme contrast concept is the industry's first plasma that
can achieve absolute black with no measurable light emitting from the
display, when reproducing black. Contrast ratio is defined as the
ratio of the luminosity of the brightest color (white) to that of the
darkest color (black). A high contrast ratio is desirable to recreate
ideal picture quality. In televisions, the truer the black, the more
accurate the color.
Exploiting the advantages of self-emitting displays, Pioneer has
succeeded in reproducing absolute black by achieving zero-idling
luminance in more than six million cells. Ultimately, the KURO extreme
contrast concept has a contrast ratio that is literally beyond
measurement, rendering the debate of contrast ratio irrelevant.
- Project KURO advanced design concept
At nine millimeters (mm) thick - the world's thinnest in 50-inch
class(1), this groundbreaking Project KURO technology results in a
picture that appears to be floating on a wall, creating an experience
for consumers where the television becomes simply a canvas for great
entertainment. In addition, its extremely light weight (18.6 kg/41
lbs) allows the television to easily be wall-mounted, contributing
handsomely to interior decor.
The Pioneer future Project KURO concepts - part of Pioneer's true
engineering passion to deliver an emotional entertainment experience -
will be showcased at the 2008 International CES in Las Vegas (CES
Booth #9827) from January 7 to 10.

LG develops mobile TV technology
LONDON (MarketWatch) - South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. has developed
technology that will make it relatively cheap for American broadcasters to
send television signals to mobile phones, according to reports.
According to reports in The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News, LG will
demonstrate at the Consumer Electronics Show that begins Monday in Las Vegas
how TV stations can buy relatively inexpensive add-on devices to their
transmitters to enable what it's calling Mobile Pedestrian Handheld (MPH)
broadcasts. Phone makers, such as LG will then have to install a reception
chip on their phones.
The technology is based on a U.S. standard designed in the mid-1990s, but
heretofore the reception was poor in moving vehicles. Now, the technology
will allow reception at 56 miles per hour, the Bloomberg report said.
In Europe, a competing standard called DVH is used in phones such as those
made by Nokia Corp. and used by mobile operators including Vodafone Group
plc.
